Short Description: Felted Sweater Stocking by The Yarniad. The Felted Sweater Stocking is a traditional holiday stocking worked from the top down with a short row heel, ribbed toe, and an Aran cable pattern twisting down both sides. The stocking is knit with aran or bulky weight wool on large needles and felted when complete. Hand felt for the soft “felted sweater” look, or throw in the wash for a tighter, smaller stocking.
Gauge: 14 sts & 20 rows = 4”/10cm in Stockinette st before felting. 16 sts & 20 rows = 4"/10cm in cable pattern before felting. 22 sts & 23 rows = 4”/10cm in cable pattern after felting
Finished Measurements: Before Felting: Width: 9”/23cm. Length to bottom of heel: 21.75”/55cm. Length from bottom of heel to tip of toe: 13”/33cm
After Felting: Width: 6.75”/17cm. Length to bottom of heel: 19”/48cm. Length from bottom of heel to tip of toe: 10”/25.5cm
Materials Used: 390 yards /355 m of a bulky weight 100% wool, such as Cascade Ecological Wool, Louet Riverstone Chunky, or Plymouth Galway Chunky
Needle Size: US 10 (6.0 mm) needles preferred for working a small-ish circumference in the round (e.g. 16”, long enough for Magic Loop, dpns)
