Spirit of the Birch
Short Description: The birch tree is a magical tree that symbolizes birth & new beginnings. My grandmother used to tell me to write my wishes on the little strips of bark that had naturally fallen off of the birch trees in her garden. This scarf is knitted in the round like a tube & then felted in the washing machine. The wispy spirit fringe is added afterwards & slightly felted by hand. Be sure to check your white wool to make sure it felts, and begin by knitting the fun little BIRCH CUFF to check your gauge.
Gauge: Work 12 sts & 14 rows to measure 4x4” by knitting in the round with US 11 (8 mm) 16” circular needles and MC. Note: this fabric should look LOOSE for better felting. Don’t hesitate to go up a needle size if you usually knit tightly.
Finished Measurements: Finished felted scarf is 78” x 3.5” (not including fringe.) Finished cuff is 4” x 3.5” (or felted to fit.)
Materials Used: A Bulky 100% wool (be sure it felts,) such as: Cascade Ecological wool. 250 g - 478 yds - 437 m, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. MC: Ecru 8010, and CC1: Chocolate 8087; 1 ball of each. You’ll only use 1/3 of the chocolate skein, so alternatively you could find a smaller skein of bulky, or hold some worsted weight wool doubled. CC2: about 20 yards of a thin cream furry or eyelash yarn like: GGH Apart, 100% nylon (for edges & fringe.)
Needle Size: A pair of US 11 (8mm) circular needles 16” long or size needed to obtain gauge, a crochet hook for attaching fringe, stitch marker and a tapestry needle.
