One of my earliest memories is of my mom throwing all the kids into the station wagon and making a mad dash downtown to Sears and Roebuck’s sewing/knitting department. It surely was a dire emergency: a dropped stitch!
We “learned” to knit at Sears only because my mom wouldn’t let us go by ourselves to the appliance department to see the (newly invented!) dish washer (the model on display had a clear front panel – you could see the dishes being washed!).
I’m no longer fascinated by dishwashers, but I do love to knit. Proof that mom really did know best! I took an extended break from knitting. As a teenager of the 70’s, knitting wasn’t “groovy”, but macramé was “far out”! Thankfully, the macramé thing didn’t last long and I realized that knitting really could be cool!
Now, with three kids, a husband, two dogs and a turtle, I knit all the time, where ever I am. Yes, sometimes even in trees (but rarely upside down)! My fingers can’t keep up with the ideas – I’m inspired by everything I see.
As a designer, I encourage you to make every garment you knit your own – experiment with texture and color. I hope that my patterns are a starting point for you to incorporate your own ideas and all the things that inspire you to create. And most important: If you love to knit, the process, the expression…..pass it on.
